49-28 Hornet win. Coach Marion gets his first win as a head coach and on the season as the Hornets slog out a game and pull away late. First off, hats off to Murcyhurst. They played a lot better than I anticipated so I completely whiffed on their potential. Hornet mistakes early gave the Lakers hope and they used it well and hung around a lot longer that should have been allowed.
The Hornet offense had a strong start to the game then got bogged down by mistakes. The Hornets didn't hold the ball for much but only failed to score when they stopped themselves. Cardell Williams (8/17, 176 yds, 2 TD, 6 car, 52 yds, 1 TD) had an efficient game and did a good job of running the offense. Damian Henderson II (12 car, 98 yds, 3 TD, 1 rec, 12 yds) had a breakout game and just narrowly missed the century mark. Rodney Hammond Jr (11 car, 81 yds, 1 rec, 4 yds) also had a strong showing as the Hornets averaged 8.3 yard per carry. Ernest Campbell (2 rec, 78 yds, 1 TD) had a big play at the end of the 1st half that allowed the Hornets to snatch the momentum and the lead just before the half.
Defensively the Hornets got the job done despite being on the field for over 35 minutes. The Hornets struggled to get off the field in critical 3rd and 4th down situations that allowed the Lakers to hang around longer than they should have. Ultimately, the Hornets got a redzone stop and forced some turnovers late in the game to secure the win. Oscar Moore (8 tak, 1.5 TFL, 1 sac, 1 INT) led the defense as the Hornets had 7 TFLs, 3 sacks, and 2 interceptions on the night.
Special teams had a sound game. Grant Meadors (7/7 PAT) nailed all the freebies and Cal McGough pinned his lone punt inside the 20. Coverage teams keep the return game in check as well. Tim Connerly Jr and Hammond both had notable returns on kickoffs.
Hornets had too sloppy of a game against a "get things right" opponent. 8 penalties for 73 yards isn't crisp as it needs to be. The offensive line took care of business against an inferior front and we got to see what the Hornet offense looks like when the running game gets going. Plenty of room for improvement on both sides of the ball but getting the first win of the Marion era has to feel good for this program.
