Potential Head Coaches

Savage, turn the channel from Fox News to ESPN and get back to talking about football. Not the forum for politics, we are all here to consider each other's perspective on Eag football and the FCS.
Agreed. There are other forums to talk politics. This one's for EWU athletics.

Not that I think he would because his ego is too big to drop to FCS but Jimmy Lake got fired as DC for the Atlanta Falcons and is just "senior defensive assistant" for the LA Rams. And was a terrible HC for UW.

I don’t think you can judge jimmy lake from his short HC stint at Montlake. I personally think jimmy lake is a great coach, and recruiter. With ties to EWU and Spokane, that might just be the spark EWU could use.

I'd agree on Jimmy Lake. The dude has loads of money and probably wants redemption, not a giant paycheck. He's another guy from my era... always thought highly of him. He knows defense, for sure.

Maybe two big failures humbled him a bit. I still think he'd rather be a DB coach in the NFL then a FCS HC.

Jeez, Central Washington scored 91 points on Western New Mexico. Their 1 loss is Montana where they scored 17 points. They have the #5 offense in D2.

There is a very real chance Central may score more points on Montana then Eastern does this season.

We have a dude in our backyard in Chris Fisk that could come in a possibly get us back to normal and that's if Baldwin doesn't want to come back.

Given the modern college football landscape, if you have two quality candidates like Fisk and Lake interested, Fisk has the ability to have his talent migrate with him whereas Lake essentially starts from zero. I hate the rip-off game that happens in football every year when a coach changes schools, but it's better to play that game than ignore it.

Shit, David Riley took darn near the whole Eastern basketball team with him when he left for WSU. I feel like this is a bullshit strategy, but that's where we are in modern college sports, so it's better to be on the front end of it.

I have a strong inkling that we're only a year or two away from government intervention in the transfer process. I think college sports will eventually have a model similar to European soccer where a team gets paid when they have a player poached by a larger school. Ultimately, that's the only logical endgame. It benefits Eastern to move more sooner than later guessing that clamps are probably coming in the near future.

Honestly, for the reasons noted above, Fisk probably represents a better target than Baldwin (if he's interested). Baldwin doesn't have the ability to bring players with him. That's going to be a major driver of coaching hires nowadays.

I can't stress it enough, but I hate that it's come to this. But it's better to embrace it than ignore it.

Been in a funk thinking we are pretty much done for as a program....thinking the worse. Then E-Wu and Dopa lift my spirits!!!

This would be a really good year to pick up a head coach, Baldwin not doing anything, he may have health issues though. Troy Taylor not doing anything as far as I can tell. The aforementioned Chris Fisk. The CWU head coach before him and our former OC Ian Shoemaker is an OC at Grand Valley State which is a ranked D2 team whos only loss is to a ranked Pittsburg State. They all have head coaching experience.

I sat next to Ian Shoemaker one time at a plane ride back from La to Seattle. Super nice guy, I think this guy can coach . However, I still would take BB over him. (BB was a pretty good evaluator of talent.) What a staff EWU had, beau baldwin, troy taylor, AB as the offensive line coach, jeff schmedling, zak hill. I believe they were all together at one time on the EWU staff. I think a lot of on-state kids would want to play for Beau Baldwin just based on what he can do as a head coach.

Actually Taylor replaced Hill after he took off to Boise State. Close enough I guess though.

Very True Seattle Eagle, that was a great offensive team. three nfl wr, (kupp, bourne, webster)and shaq hill as a backup.Uunheard for a FCS team. If only we have had the defense to match it I truly believe we would have national champs.

Point of order, Shaq Hill was the third starter that year. Nsimba Webster was coming off the bench. Because Bourne and Kupp became NFL stars, Shaq Hill has less name recognition. But he was super elite. He was the speed burner who excelled at getting separation on long fly routes. I remember one game he burst past Montana State’s secondary for very long TDs twice in the same game.

Absolutely. Shaq Hill was no joke. Just overshadowed playing behind Kupp and Bourne.

I don't even see a "this game is probably a win" in the rest of the schedule. Northern Colorado and especially Cal Poly have improved that much. Sac State or Northern Colorado at home are probably the best chances for a win. Last time we played Montana in Missoula we lost 67 to 7 and they were ranked 16th in the country. Yea that isn't happening, Eastern is more likely to go winless in the last 6 games then Best proving himself.

I know a couple former players at my work that don't even go to games anymore. One went to homecoming cause of free tickets. They're just like I can't watch that train wreck anymore. Not sure if they feel guilty or not but I wouldn't. They agree with you btw. They say Best is more concerned with recruit 4.0 students who overthink their job and try to do other peoples jobs then guys who "eat rocks" I guess meaning dumber guys who are willing to go out and smash people in the face.
I think Best is trying make due with what he can get. We really haven’t figured out how to use the portal at all. We haven’t lost a ton of good players to the portal either, mainly because we never had good players in the first place. Can’t even remember the last big transfer we had incoming…. The talent level just isn’t there for us at all. Even when we get a recruit that looks semi-good out of Hs, we aren’t developing them.

If I’m Best- or whoever replaces him- the guys I’m leaning into are D2 or lower level guys that have shown the ability to play. Taking drop-downs is a messy game, because a lot of those guys wash out because they were never that good to begin with. I can’t remember an impactful drop down we’ve had since Pulu. Maybe there’s someone I’m forgetting, but nothing off the top of my head.

Wu Tang posted about Fisk, and he’s an attractive guy to me if he’s interested. The guys he’s sporting at Central could come to Cheney and instantly upgrade our quality. As I’ve said over and over, I hate the game of a coach leaving and bringing his players with him, but that’s a big part of the hiring decision these days… might as well make it work for us.
