Baseball falls 9-8 in opening game at SJS

Game one went to San Jose State in sloppy fashion as a walk results in a walk-off victory. Starting pitcher for the Bears was Chase Cleary who is a sophomore juco transfer (I think). Coach thinks enough of him to start him on the Friday game where he gets mixed reviews. He goes 4 innings giving up 4 earned runs. You be the judge. The final score was 9-8 and most Spartan fans were a little upset with the score. Well, not the score so much as the three errors that resulted in 4 unearned runs. Both teams’ pitchers had troubles finding the strike zone as a total of 17 walks was allowed. That’s not good. Nine of those were by Bears’ pitchers and none hurt more than the three that Caleb Kirkman (0-1) gave up in the ninth inning.

Highlights for the Bears? Brandon Vaughn and Dan Reese both had two hits. No pitcher really stood out for me. Just look at the box score and you’ll see why. Bases on balls did the Bears in. Again, a sloppy game by both teams. Move on
