FLORES BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD AS HORNETS UPSET NO. 12 CAL 12-6

BERKELEY, Calif. - Behind a 4-for-4 day from senior David Flores, and a four RBI performance from sophomore Tim Wheeler, the Sacramento State baseball team upset No. 12 ranked California by a score of 12-6 on Tuesday, March 18 at Evans Diamond.
With the win, the Hornets improve to 5-11, while the Bears fall to 13-3-1 on the season.
The Hornets opened the scoring the top of the first, as they scored two unearned runs in the inning, as senior Taylor Watanabe scored on an error and senior Flores scored on a wild pitch to make the score 2-0. Sacramento State then scored six runs in the top of the second, all with two outs. Flores starting the scoring with two-run double, setting the school record for career doubles with 39. Senior Wes Oberlin then provided a RBI walk, scoring senior Ryan Blair and keeping the bases loaded. Wheeler then cleared the bases, providing a three-run double to give the Hornets a 8-0 lead.
Sacramento State did not score again until the top of the seventh, as Oberlin connected on a solo home run, his third of the season, giving the Hornets a 9-0 lead. The Bears fought back in the bottom of the inning, as Charlie Cutler connected on a RBI single, and David Cooper hit a three-run homer, his eighth of the season, cutting the Hornets lead to 9-4.
The Bears cut the lead further to 9-6 in the bottom of the eighth, as Michael Capbarat and Dylan Tonneson connected on back-to-back solo home runs. The Hornets then provided three insurance runs to seal the victory in the top of the ninth, as Wheeler connected on a RBI sacrifice fly, and senior Jeff Hannah hit a RBI double.
Hornets starter, senior Corey Weglin, threw three innings of scoreless baseball, allowing one hit while walking three and striking out two. Senior Alvaro Orozco (2-0) threw 3.1 innings of relief, picking up the victory. Junior Brian Smith threw the final four outs of the ball game, collecting his first career save. California starter Michael Bugary (0-1) picked up the loss, allowing five runs, none of which were earned, on two hits, walking two in 1.2 innings. The Bears had five errors in the game, with 10 of the 11 Hornet runs counting as team unearned runs.
Flores finished 4-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Oberlin finished the contest 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI.
The Hornets are back in action on Friday and Saturday, as they host Gonzaga at Hornet Field. First pitch on Friday is set for 2 p.m., with a doubleheader Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.
