UNC baseball loses 2 of 3 at Chicago State

Disappointment is the best way to describe the outcome of this weekend's series at WAC rival Chicago St. The Bears had a golden opportunity to gain ground in the conference standings, but took two tough losses before rebounding on Sunday to salvage a win in the finale.

Game 1 on Friday featured UNC bats that were stifled by Chicago St pitching, scratching out just 4 hits and losing 4-2. Game 2 was a heartbreaker as the Bears fought back from a 4-2 deficit to the tie the game in the top of the 9th. Extra innings seemed to be in the cards as UNC retired the first two Chicago St batters in the bottom of the ninth, but a single was followed by a triple to give Chicago St the victory. On Sunday UNC jumped out to a 7-0 lead by the top of the 5th, but then spent the remaining innings holding on tight as Chicago St attempted a comeback. UNC won 7-5 but Chicago St had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the 9th.

UNC is now 9-25, 4-7 in the WAC (7th place) and faces another critical series this coming weekend at North Dakota (6-24, 3-12 in the WAC, last place). This is likely the last ever meeting between the two schools as North Dakota's baseball program will end after this season.

If the season ended today UNC would qualify for the WAC tournament as the top 6 teams make it (and 6th place Grand Canyon is not eligible). However, UNC needs to rack up some wins in their 14 remaining games to assure that they make it to the tourney.

The team is 9-25 and you are talking about the conference tournament? How many loses would we need to have before it would be embarrassing to even discuss post season? I would think that 9-25 would qualify but I am apparently the only one at UNC still capable of being embarrassed by our athletic department....
