• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

NIL Importance

The more I’ve been reading. The more I’m projecting NIL deals will continue to separate top schools from the mediocre in the next few years.
Coach Harbaugh Michigan was suggesting player revenue sharing. Arizona State HC was telling fan base to focus on NIL revenue to attract and retain players.

I don't think we even have an NIL "collective." I know guys are picking up stuff here and there. But, yeah - we're not wowing anyone with NIL deals.

We will need to make sure to stay competitive in this category as well. Crazy Times!
I asked SAC STATE to start selling better quality gear to support NIL. Authentic Adidas Jerseys of favorite players for example is a way we can all boost support.

We can’t even figure out how to use the Quote function on a message board correctly. I’m not expecting our fan base to get organized enough for a collective anytime soon.

I expect the NIL issue will ramp up for us as well as we saw Idaho get raided of talent, now U Montana lost its QB as well.
Sac State does have an NIL set up. We need to start getting some participation in 24 & 25 to remain competitive w TOP FCS that will start having to fund the NIL too.
Great place to start is with high quality player gear (adidas) w player numbers etc. They ADD $50 NIL to jersey price.
The current stuff of BigSky is cheap gear.
The times are changing. Our program needs to evolve as well. Hopefully we can start by selling cool gear online for fans! Would be nice to see fans in town and at games w solid gear!

Agree that nice gear is more attractive to purchase than cheap gear, but better gear with a $50 add on to go towards an NIL pool of money is not going to move the needle. Reality is the Big Sky conference is not going to be able to compete with most of the conferences when it comes to NIL money. Just not enough boosters with the big assets.

Agree… We cannot compete with FBS NIL. However if we want to recruit 3 ⭐️ quality players. We don’t need to make them rich, these kids would be happy to have some spending $ to buy clothes, take GF to dinner and have some fun.
We must have enough NIL to compete w Montana, South Dakota State, UC Davis, North Dakota St. If we can stay on par we will be fine!

When people ever ask what I will do if I win the lottery, I always tell them I would spend and embarrassing amount of money trying to turn Sac State into a CFB power.

They are always stunned, and think I’m joking. I am not - and that’s why I’m a sick individual.

That’s awesome 👏 I wish we had more folks like you with the same amount of passion for this underdog program. I have started to donate more to the program but yeah it would nice if the hornets got some big donors to help accelerate the growth of the program

We have something called an "Exchange". Here is the link. I have no idea how active it is but it's not something that interests me. These "collectives" are just a way for boosters to launder money to legitimately play the players (paying extra for gear in hopes of it going to NIL is an awful idea). With it being legit to pay players in this digital age, IMO there's just no need to have the money going through a 3rd party to get it into the players hands. Anyone can slide into the DMs and get cash directly into the hands of a player without anyone ever needing to know. I'm not a lawyer, but it would be wise to pay in cash so the transaction isn't traceable by the University, the NCAA, and most importantly the IRS. A legal transaction between two consenting adults is no one's business.

On the macro side of the pay to play issue, this is just the way things are now in college athletics. This is free agency for college athletes and it's quite the sight to see. Some athletes are going to get paid, and deservedly so.

Side note, if you are an SMU fan, how pissed are you that your program got destroyed for being a couple decades ahead of the times?

I really don't like this. Of course, I'm extremely old school, so perhaps my opinion doesn't count. But whatever we do with this, we had better make sure we have people involved who know EXACTLY what the rules are at any given moment and ensure that we don't break them. FL State just got nailed to the wall for violating NIL rules.

This is going to be very hard because the caveats SD mentions above are going to be a major pain in the tookus....

I have some experience with direct NIL deals with Sac State players. If you are serious about putting together a deal and have questions I can help. Feel free to reach out privately.

Revenue sharing? I understand paying players in the money making sports in the power conferences where the tv money is insane and they can pay coaches 5-10 million and even pay a coach $70 million to go away so they can hire another one. The majority of schools, like Sac State, don’t live in that world. We can’t figure out a way to financially improve our facilities. We have no wealthy boosters at the level needed to change the landscape. Do not see the power conferences agreeing to revenue sharing. Our best bet would be to partner with the local casino’s. Sky River in Elk Grove is just crushing it. They are interested in building an event center but so far Sac State has declined. Too far from campus. UCLA students have to travel an hour to Pasadena and that does not seem to be a problem. I am sure Sky River would send their busses to campus to pick up students for the twenty minute ride. The administration needs to change their thinking. Hope is not a plan and spending $5 million on the Well to install pull out stands, lighting, and a PA system is not going to get it done. Neither is the minimal amount of money our small booster pool can contribute to a NIL exchange that I am sure is taking a cut for administration fees. The school needs to tap into the big money at Sky River, Thunder Valley, Red Hawk etc. Those casinos probably make more in a weekend than all of our ticket sales and booster donations in an entire year. On a recent week night there were 14,000 people gambling at Sky River. Need to change our thinking on J street.

Agree casino donors would be great. But having on campus facilities is key. UCLA doesn’t get as many students at USC does because it is a hastle to get the Rose Bowl,
NIL is important that we follow rules and it goes through the supervision of the official NIL program that SAC State authorized. Let’s not get into the grey area.
We do NOT need to pretend that we can provide P5 FBS support. We never suggested that. However if we can get some of our better players some “Spending Money” like 2-3K month that should be too hard if we get 300-500 donors putting in $100 per month.
I am thinking Montana & Dakota Schools will start delivering NIL to there best players.

The school wants to draw the city to campus, not drive them away. It is imperative that any facility be on the 310 acre's of campus.

If they cant fundraise for facilities better than 1954, how are they going to raise NIL money?

They have shown no ability to fundraise. I don’t think we have any undiscovered wealthy boosters. Not sure where any meaningful NIL money will come from. On campus facilities would always be preferred but without an increase in student fees I don’t see an event center in our future. I would jump at Sky River’s offer.

NIL could be a “grass roots” tool to support our players. Even donating $50 month when you get large quantities as the program grows turns into good funding to help few kids have some spending money each month.

OSH, I have supported players (Asher O’Hara) directly through NIL when they have offered opportunities up through social media.

I am not an oil baron that can float a program, but if anyone sees players advertise custom gear, etc. through social media, please share here - happy to support.

Kadeezy - Great Idea. Yes please share those entrepreneurs

I’d like to buy cool gear and support them.

Hornet football gear for players is awesome.

The gear for fans looks cheap.
