• Hi Guest,

We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

With the migration, in some circumstances, your username could have been merged with one of your other usernames from the other forums. If this is the case, you can request to change your username in your account details page of your profile.

WAC (g)rumblings

All is not rosy in WAC football, mainly with the former Southland members. Incarnate Word announced that they are going to the WAC, while Sam Houston and New Mexico State are leaving after one year and going to the C-USA. Lamar has just announced their intent to leave the WAC and rejoin the Southland, hopefully by the beginning of this athletic year. McNeese was going to go to the WAC, but opted at the last minute to stay in the Southland.

Sam Houston State didn’t even really take a seat before CUSA came calling.

Blame University of Texas at Austin. That’s where this round really started.

I question whether the Southland can really be a catalyst to bring back the other Texas schools that left. But I question the sustainability of the WAC.

But I also question the sustainability of FCS schools in the current alignment. Which, eh, don’t blink on that alignment, for where there’s another chance for big schools to plant a dagger into smaller schools if it benefits the bigs, they will most certainly get stabby.

So a regular podcast dives into this a little bit. Or more.

To me, the more interesting discussion involves FBS conferences looking to add even more members and the possibilities around that as some current FCS conferences are already threatened. One thing brought up is a concept of more sport-specific hybrid conferences, something which might dilute the power of current conferences and make things MAYBE more sane, maybe less, maybe a combination of both.

Rumors via twitter that Incarnate Word is backing out of their WAC invitation and returning to the Southland. They were set to join the WAC on July 1.

Also, rumors not as loud but still noteworthy...Central Arkansas may be leaving the ASUN and returning to the Southland as well.

Like what?

This issue came up last month, got debunked, wait a month, THWACK!

Still wondering if there’s going to be an FCS in a year or so. This has become a cute little sidebar.

More than rumors...

The same podcast referenced earlier (which will apparently change hosts in a month) produced an end-of-year edition.

Perhaps you’d be smart to wait for the last 10 minutes and listen to speculation that the NCAA is likely to lose their court case, thereby NIL is considered illegal because athletes are considered employees and Congress might not give a spit.

But as it pertains to the subject, you have Matt Brown (who isn’t all that dim on the subject) speculating that the WAC will fall apart by the end of 2023. This also speculates that the proposed Atlantic Sun-WAC football “merger” will not produce an FBS conference as proposed, but could spur movement out the WAC.
