SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State’s potent offense combined for 29 runs and 31 hits over two games as the Hornets swept a Pacific Coast Softball Conference (PCSC) doubleheader from San Diego today at the USD Softball Complex. The Hornets mercy ruled San Diego in both contests, winning the first game, 20-3, in five innings before taking the second game, 9-1, in six innings.

Sacramento State entered today (the final day of the regular season) needing a sweep of San Diego, and one loss by Loyola Marymount in its doubleheader with Saint Mary’s. That’s exactly what the Hornets received. After finishing second in the league standings each of the last three years, Sacramento State got over the hump today, finishing the regular season with a 32-19 overall record, and a conference-best 14-6 mark in the PCSC.

Sacramento State will now receive the league’s automatic berth into the NCAA Regionals, a place the Hornets haven’t been since 1995. The team will now be making its third appearance in the NCAA’s postseason event (1993, 1995, 2008) since joining the Div. I ranks in 1990. Sacramento State will find out when, where and who it will play in the NCAA Regionals when selections are made on Sunday, May 11, at 7 p.m. PST. The selection show can be viewed live on ESPNU. Most likely, the team will be playing its first game on Friday, May 23.

Sacramento State, which has been a member of the Western Athletic Conference (1993-96), Big West Conference (1997-02) and the PCSC (2003-pres.), won its first conference title since joining the Div. I ranks. The Hornets had four second-place finishes (1993, 2005, 2006, 2007) before winning today’s crown.

Two weeks ago, Sacramento State, which has now won at least 30 games five times in the last six years, found itself in fourth place with a 6-6 conference record. The team needed to win its final eight games of the conference season to have a shot at the title, and that’s exactly what the Hornets did, sweeping four-game series from both Santa Clara and San Diego.

The Hornets finish the regular season atop the conference standings, just one game ahead of both Loyola Marymount (13-7) and Portland State (13-7). Sacramento State will enter the NCAA postseason event as winners of eight straight and 13 of its last 18 games. The Hornets are 0-4 all-time at the NCAA Regionals, posting 0-2 records in both 1993 and 1995.

“I’m so proud of the team for staying focused and taking it one game at a time over the last couple weeks,” Sacramento State head coach Kathy Strahan said. “We’re excited to not only bring home a championship to Sacramento State, but also to the community. This has been a dream team to coach and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the ride, but our work is not done. We still have work to do at the NCAA Regionals.”

Softball’s title marks the seventh conference championship that the Sacramento State athletics department has earned this year, joining volleyball, women’s soccer, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field, women’s tennis and men’s tennis (regular season championship). The department still has an opportunity to win three more titles, as the men’s and women’s outdoor track teams and the baseball squad are nearing the end of their seasons. Sacramento State, which sponsors 20 intercollegiate sports, won a program-record eight conference crowns last year.

The Hornets left little doubt in today’s doubleheader as the team batted .477 (31-for-65) in both games, including three doubles, two triples and 27 RBIs. Of the 10 innings that Sacramento State had an at-bat, the Hornets scored in eight of those innings, including a seven-run second and an eight-run third inning in the first game.

Sacramento State’s 20 runs in the first game obliterated the previous program single-game record of 16 runs, set in 2006 against Miami University. The 19 hits tied a school record, set earlier this year against Portland State.

Seven different Hornets with at least four at-bats hit better than .425 during the doubleheader, comprised of Jenice Bartee (3-for-4, three runs, six RBIs), Izmena Cabrera (5-for-7, three runs, four RBIs), Rachel Miles (4-for-6, two runs, four RBIs), Hilary Johnson (5-for-9, three runs, seven RBIs), Whitney Loomis (3-for-6, three runs, two RBIs), Amy Tompkins (4-for-9, five runs, one RBI) and Jamie Schloredt (3-for-7, four runs, two RBIs).

Johnson’s seven RBIs were two shy of her season total of nine heading into the doubleheader. Cabrera finished the four-game series batting a ridiculous .786 (11-for-14) with three doubles, one triple, 10 RBIs and a 1.143 slugging percentage. She now has 52 RBIs this year which is easily the new Sacramento State single-season record, surpassing the previous mark of 42, set by Schloredt in 2006.

Sophomore right-hander Brittani Clifford picked up wins in both games today, allowing three runs (two earned) and six hits over 8.0 innings. She finishes the regular season with a team-high tying 13 wins (Kayla Meeks also has 13), and a team-best six saves and a 2.47 ERA.

Sacramento State’s offense, which scored double figures in runs a program-best eight times this year, finishes the regular season with another program record for batting average at .315. A complete list of all the records set this year can be found below.
