Sand Volleyball to Big West

Per Hornetsports:
IRVINE, CA – The Big West Conference today announced the addition of sand volleyball as the conference's 17th-sponsored sport, and Sacramento State will be among the six schools competing for the conference championship in 2016.

Four Big West institutions currently field sand volleyball teams: Cal Poly, CSUN, Long Beach State and Hawai'i. Sacramento State and CSU Bakersfield accepted an invitation to join the conference as associate members in sand volleyball, giving the league the minimum six teams required for postseason NCAA automatic qualification.

The Big West's inaugural sand volleyball season will debut in the spring of 2016. A six-team, double-elimination conference tournament also will take place at a date and site to be determined. Initially, there will be no regular season round-robin conference competition.
Now if Macriss can just add a coach that will actually give this program a chance to be successful...

I'm not sure if we really need a new coach, considering that volleyball has a high graduation rate. I think getting a softer schedule is going to help now that we're in the Big West.

My comment was geared more towards the fact that Volta turned a dominating championship caliber program into an at best middle of the road program in a weak volleyball conference. He’s only been able to get the Hornets into the BSCT twice in his 9 years here (none since 2011) and has not won a BSC regular season title. Safe to say our best volleyball years are well behind us if Volta is kept around.

Since the BW is only having a tournament (“initially”), I assume the Hornets will still be playing the regional teams in SV so the schedule toughness won’t change much. Also Long Beach and Hawaii are good programs in SV so I don’t expect the Hornets to win the BWT. The SV program is only a few years old but I don’t expect it to become anything special under Volta's watch.

SD is correct, particularly about who the teams to beat in the new Big West Beach Volleyball League are. (Yes, the NCAA has already announced that they're changing the name to the more familiar Beach Volleyball). LBSU is the 2013 AVCA National Champions on the beach.

For most schools, however, this isn't going to be a marquee program. Sort of like Cross Country and Indoor Track relate to Outdoor Track, Beach Volleyball will likely serve as a way to get experience and dole out more schollies for people in the Indoor Volleyball program.

I think that it's a lot easier for people who don't really know the program to just look at the wins and losses and decide to fire the coach. I just hope that Marcriss gets more information before he decides to let Volta go or not. I'm sure that Colberg has a significantly bigger budget than Volta, which should be put into consideration.

I doubt Volta has a smaller budget then what Colberg had. The athletics budget as a whole is approaching $20M and has done nothing but increase since the late 2000’s. Also the volleyball locker rooms were all revamped a few years ago and the Nest is going to get a new/renovated lounge area.

There is no question that Volta has done less with more. I agree about Macriss though, he should have everything he needs to know when it’s time to make a decision on this.

Wasn't Colberg the AD and volleyball coach at one point and also helped pick the last AD. The point is that volleyball doesn't make any money and will never; so if you have a coach that graduates their players and has an okay record then you shouldn't waste time or money to try to change it. Even if we had a winning record, it wouldn't bring in any money.

None of the sports make money…and that holds true for about 95% of all athletic departments. So should we just drop the entire department?

It’s great that Volta is graduating his players and that is something that every program should be doing. But let’s not sit here and pretend that just because his players are graduating that it is okay for his program to under preform on the court. I sure hope that mentality isn’t prevalent within the department; otherwise we will be in a world of hurt soon. Play to win or don’t play at all.

No, we shouldn't drop the athletic department. You should realize that your'e always asking to fire the head coach. Which gets tiresome for me. You should use facts that are stronger to support your view. I get better discussions with my daughter who is in high school. But then again she goes to more games than you and she isn't so emotional about firing coaches as you. She looks at the bigger picture.

Of course she has, there hasn’t been much reason to tune into VB for quite a few years now…which is exactly my point…not sure how much bigger picture you can get after 8 years of mediocrity but whatever.

And to be clear, Volta won’t be fired nor am I advocating for such…I just hope Macriss decides to not renew his contract (when the time comes) and brings in someone that will get this program back to (or near) its former glory.

With Sand Volleyball's six schollies, which can be given out in portions to the entire Sand squad, the Hornets should be a power team in court in the Sky. Those schollies can be given to defensive specialists, liberos, setters, and others wouldn't be getting full scholarships. That is quite an advantage. 50% more scholarships in the sport. Scholarships in court normally get used for hitter and blockers, so Sac St shouldn't have any excuses anymore. Sand probably makes a better court player and vice versa, except at the pro levels.

This year, UND pulled in quite a freshman group that is rated in the top 50. We have the perfect setup for court volley, but we don't have sand. Nebraska started Sand to take advantage of more schollies. It's like having both indoor and outdoor track. To be a power, you'll need both. I hope UND adds it. They can practice and play in our new indoor practice center, which has a 300 m track with a 100 yd football field.

Thanks for the excellent information. We need more of this and less emotional chatter.

Emotional chatter?
Here’s the link to the VB archives. Here are the facts under Volta you so desperately crave:
  • • 93-128 (42.08 winning %) as HC since 2008
    • Haven’t beaten the dungpilers since 2010
    • Haven’t been to the BSCT since 2011
    • Zero BSC regular season titles
    • Zero BSC tournament titles
    • Zero NCAAT appearances
    • 2014’s 8-23 record was the worst in program history (archives only go back to 1976)
    • Volta’s best season (2011: 17-15, 10-6 BSC) is comparable to the worst in the 2 decades prior to his tenure as HC. You have to go all the way back to 1994 (18-12) or 1991 (13-19) to find anything remotely as bad.
So yeah you’re right; let’s not get emotional and just stick to the facts because those provide the clear cut picture.

Give Volta another year of mediocrity and the new VB coach should be the Sand HC and seeing how he does maybe a replacement for Volta for both programs soon.

SDH, you nailed it.

Believe the 5 year athletic department strategic plan laid out a couple of years back was to graduate athletes and to win championships. Time for the once dominant Sac State volleyball program n the Big Sky to get back on top of the BSC standings And believe that the Sac State graduation rate and GPA is outstanding in all sports compared to other Big Sky schools and even compared to the entire student body at Sac state. So time for the Hornets to win and fill Hornet Gym with a new generation of fans like fans of the past who came to campus under Colberg led teams proud to be the best program in the Sky. It's time.

I don't know if Volta should be fired or not. However I do know that it's a lot more complicated than just looking at the wins and losses. If you look at Kathleen Raske, the track coach, she has one of the best facilities in California, but isn't really doing anything great. Winning the BSC is nothing great with the type of facilities she has. We also shouldn't forget that the volleyball team plays in the same venue as the men's basketball team. We all know that the Hornet Arena sucks. Last year we had a great men's basketball team, but next year we'll have a .500 team until we get a new arena. If we do decide to get a new VB coach, we'll need to put more money into the program to return it to the Colberg days. I would like to spend money on the football team, which is the one team that will get a return on our investment.

I’m not sure where you are going with this aside from downplaying the importance of a conference title and making excuses for Volta. The idea that conference titles aren’t noteworthy pretty much removes any reason for sponsoring athletics. These athletes play for titles; that is a goal for every program year in and year out.

Colberg had the same shit facilities (actually worse when you consider the minor upgrades the Nest has received in recent years) and her programs dominated the BSC for a decade straight. Volta inherited a great program and can’t even make post season play…a feat that HALF the conference claims every year.
And you serious don’t believe what Raske has done with T&F is “nothing great”? Next time do a little research before spouting off such absurdities. From her Hornetsports bio:
Prior to 2004 the Hornet Track & Field/Cross Country programs had never finished better than fourth as a team at a Big Sky Conference Championship meet. Kathleen Raske took the helm in 2004 and quickly turned the program around. Raske has led the Hornets to 14 Big Sky team championships while finishing second seven additional times. To say that times have changed is an understatement.
The women have dominated the BSC (indoor and outdoor) since 2008. The men have done well since 2007 and only have roughly half as many scholarships as most BSC programs. Numerous Hornet athletes have continually made it to Regionals following the regular season. Yeah…”nothing great”…

heck, remember when Colberg used to win conference championships in North Gym at Sac State where the team played home matches with portable bleachers rolled in. They did not even play in Hornet Gym until the mid 1980s.

And winning Big Sky championships?

How many Big Sky champions in any sports at any Big Sky schools moved past the first round once they make the NCAA tourney. It is very rare.

And the big name Big Sky schools like Montana State and Montana never move past the first round in NCAA tourney play despite their huge advantage in facilities compared to Sac State in all sports accept football where it is at the FCS level. And those schools also have at least 7 less sports than Sac State where their resources are pumped into football and basketball. And the Montana schools have the most home games in football each year due to their outstanding attendance and do not have to play up to pay the bills. That being said Montana and Montana State draw excellent crowds for volleyball and it's time for Sac State to fill Hornet Gym again. The crowds were bigger under Colberg. The culture was better under Colberg. Time to get that culture back. And yes we all want an event center. One can only imagine how Hornet sports will take off when that happens.

And Coach Race? Huh? Probably the most title winning coach in all sports in the Big Sky currently. The Sac State trophy case is bursting with trophies from track and field. And the case is also filled with volleyball trophies but most of them are very dusty during this 7 year drought.
