News: PSU raises $530,000 at Simon Benson Awards with Charlie Gibson as keynote speaker

(Portland, Ore.) October 7, 2010 – Portland State University (PSU) held its 11th Annual Simon Benson Awards on Tuesday night to honor local philanthropists Ann and Mark Edlen, and Shirley and Jim Rippey. Charles Gibson, former host on ABC’s Good Morning America, was the keynote speaker.

This year’s event had the largest attendance in its history and raised the largest amount of money. “At a time when state support is dwindling and enrollment continues to rise, universities are becoming more dependent upon the generosity of the private sector,” said PSU President Wim Wiewel. “Everyone here realizes that education is an important investment.”

The Edlen’s are known for leadership and innovation in building a sustainable Portland, and they were being honored for their generous, philanthropic investments such as supporting projects that improve the environment, mentoring young people and changing the lives of those struggling with illness and addiction.

The Rippey’s philanthropy efforts have changed lives for the better in communities throughout Oregon. Through the JFR Foundation and their active volunteer leadership, they have advanced health care, children’s services, and education statewide.

Gibson, retired newsman and longtime anchor for Good Morning America, delivered the keynote speech. Gibson, who is a visiting fellow at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, detailed how "broken" Congress has become, gridlocked by hyper-partisanship and vicious campaigns compared to the more civil debate that occurred during the 1980s when he covered Congress and the White House for ABC News.

PSU was able to raise over half-a-million dollars thanks to the generosity of the 1,150 guests, our presenting sponsor Rick Miller (MBA ’ 91), and 16 other sponsors donating $10,000 or more including the following:

Miller Family Holdings, Peter and Julie Stott, Columbia Sportswear Company, Jeannine B. Cowles, GBD ARCHITECTS Incorporated, Gerding Edlen Development Company, Harsch Investment Properties, Hoffman Construction Company, Howard S. Wright Constructors, Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund, Oregon Business Magazine, Portland Art Museum, Skanska USA Building Inc, University of Oregon, Wells Fargo, ZGF Architects LLP

Portland State University raised more than $1.2 million—a new record—at its 14th annual Simon Benson Awards Dinner on Tuesday at the Oregon Convention Center. More than 1,800 people—another record—attended the event honoring philanthropy and alumni achievement.

Anderson Cooper, award-winning journalist and CNN news anchor, captivated the audience with his stories of covering news around the globe and engaged in a lively question and answer session with Peter Bhatia, editor of The Oregonian.

“This was one of our most successful events to date,” said Vice President for University Advancement Françoise Aylmer. “Not only did we raise funds, but we also raised the profile of philanthropy at Portland State University. It was a great opportunity to catch up with PSU friends and make new ones.”

President Wim Wiewel used the occasion to announce that Rick Miller MBA ’91 and his wife, Erika Miller, are lead donors with gifts totaling $8 million to the School of Business Administration building campaign. PSU will triple the size of its business school, adding classrooms, project rooms, an auditorium and other improvements. The project will be funded with $40 million in state bonds approved by the legislature this year and $20 million in private gifts. PSU has already raised $14 million in private gifts and expects to begin construction in January 2015.

The Millers received this year’s Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy. In addition to PSU, they have given to Portland area public schools, the Ronald McDonald House, Self Enhancement Inc., Make-a-Wish Foundation, University of Oregon, and Portland Community Church. Rick Miller is co-founder of Rogue Venture Partners, helping Oregon-based entrepreneurs and early stage businesses with funding and mentorship, and is founder of the Avamere Group, one of the largest senior health care and housing providers in the Northwest. Erika Miller graduated from the University of Puget Sound with a degree in international business and foreign language. She led a successful career in banking in Seattle and Portland and now spends her time volunteering in local public schools and raising their family.

Bill Stoller MBA ’79 received this year’s Simon Benson Award for Alumni Achievement. He co-founded Express Employment Professionals, an international staffing company with more than 600 franchises, and owns Xenium, a human resource management company. Stoller transformed his family’s Dundee Hills turkey farm into the award-winning Stoller Family Estate, a solar-generating, gravity-flow winery and the first in the United States to attain gold-level LEED certification. Stoller is also co-owner of Chehalem, a Newberg winery.

Event proceeds support scholarships to ensure access to all—thanks to a matching grant from the Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund—as well as innovative programs and exceptional faculty. PSU created the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy in 1999 and named it after one of Oregon’s first philanthropists to honor the region’s contemporary philanthropists. PSU launched the Simon Benson Award for Alumni Achievement in 2012 to honor outstanding alumni.

Bank of America was the presenting sponsor and Avamere was the VIP reception sponsor. Principal sponsors were Fairbridge Foundation, Fred Meyer, Jack and Lynn Loacker, Pete and Chris Nickerson, Rogue Venture Partners, Ralph & Bunny Schlesinger Foundation, Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation, Peter W. Stott Foundation, and Howard S. Wright.

Leon Panetta, the former CIA director and defense secretary in the Obama administration, will give the keynote speech at this year's Portland State University Simon Benson Awards Dinner.

The 15th annual dinner, held to raise money and honor philanthropists and an alumnus, will be Oct. 24 at the Oregon Convention Center, according to a PSU news release.

PSU President Wim Wiewel will present the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy to Earle M. Chiles and to Christine and David Vernier. He'll give the alumni achievement award to sociology alumnus Ramon S. Torrecilha, Ph.D.

Last year's dinner was attended by more than 1,800 and raised more than $1.2 million for the Fund for PSU, which aids students, faculty and programs.

Chiles, CEO of Chiles and Affiliated Cos. and president of the Chiles Foundation, is being honored for many gifts to Oregon higher education and medical research.

The Verniers, founders of Vernier Software & Technology of Beaverton, have supported endowed scholarships and centers at PSU, and have given to many groups including OMSI and the Oregon Food Bank, according to the release.

Torrecilha, a native of Brazil, overcame childhood poverty to become a distinguished academic with a commitment to multiculturalism. For the third year in a row, the Portland State University Foundation raised more than $1 million at its annual Simon Benson Awards Dinner. Over 1,400 people attended the gala honoring philanthropists and alumni.

The event Thursday at the Oregon Convention Center again exceeded its $150,000 Maybelle Clark Macdonald Fund scholarship challenge grant and raised gifts for the Fund for PSU supporting students, faculty and programs.

“Philanthropy transforms lives, especially at Portland State University,” says PSU Foundation President/CEO Françoise Aylmer. “Scholarships, endowed professorships, faculty research and academic programs are supported with private gifts. Lincoln Hall has been renovated and we will expand the School of Business, thanks to donors. Portland State has strong connections in this community and we are grateful.”

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense and CIA Director Leon E. Panetta was the evening’s keynote speaker. Panetta shared stories from his new memoir, Worthy Fights, and reflected on 30 years of public service.

The dinner included presentation of Simon Benson Awards for philanthropy and alumni achievement. The awards are named for one of Oregon’s early philanthropists.

Native Portland businessman and philanthropist Earle M. Chiles received the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy for his many generous contributions in Portland and across the United States. At Portland State University, he has funded endowed scholarships and endowed professorships. As president of the Chiles Foundation, he has also made significant gifts to the University of Portland, Providence Portland Medical Center and has assisted thousands of Oregonians through grants to non-profit organizations. Chiles is the chief executive officer of Chiles and Affiliated Companies, and served on the board of directors of the company his grandfather founded, Fred Meyer, Inc.
Christine and David Vernier also received the Simon Benson Award for Philanthropy. Their company, Vernier Software & Technology, produces software and hardware for science classrooms across the country and around the world and is regarded as one of the best companies to work for in Oregon. Business success has made it possible for the Verniers to give generously to numerous organizations in Oregon, including OMSI, the Oregon chapter of The Nature Conservancy, Loaves & Fishes, and the Oregon Food Bank. At Portland State University, they are advancing science education by supporting endowed scholarships, the Center for Science Education, the Science Research and Teaching Center, and the University Venture Development Fund.
Ramon S. Torrecilha, Ph.D. (PSU: ’84, M.S. ’86) received the Simon Benson Award for Alumni Achievement. Born in Brazil, Torrecilha created a new life for himself in the United States as a respected and influential university professor and administrator. Currently a full professor of sociology at California State University-Dominguez Hills, Torrecilha has served in a variety of faculty and administrative posts—including provost and executive vice president at Berkeley College in New York and executive vice president and acting president at Mills College in California. He brings a commitment to multiculturalism to the institutions he serves, and his inspiring story demonstrates how Portland State University’s mission of access transforms lives.
Bank of America was this year’s presenting sponsor. Principal sponsors were: Harold & Arlene Schnitzer CARE Foundation; Fred Meyer, Inc.; Jack and Lynn Loacker; Schlesinger Family Foundation; Vernier Software & Technology; and Howard S. Wright, a Balfour Beatty company.

THURSDAY, Oct 29 - Portland State University raised more than $1 million Thursday night at the 16th Annual Simon Benson Awards Dinner. Held at the Oregon Convention Center, nearly 1,500 guests celebrated the generosity of PSU supporters, the impact of philanthropy and the accomplishments of students who depend on philanthropy to earn a college degree.

It was the fourth year in a row that donors contributed more than $1 million to support student scholarships, faculty excellence, cutting-edge research and innovative programming at PSU.

“I’m exceptionally proud of PSU and all we accomplish in our classrooms, in our labs and out in the community,” Portland State President Wim Wiewel told supporters. “I know that we wouldn’t be this successful without your help.”

The evening highlights included keynote speaker Arianna Huffington, chair, president and editor-in-chief of the Huffington Post Media Group.

The Simon Benson Awards Dinner is named after one of Oregon’s earliest philanthropists, and also features awards for alumni achievement and philanthropy.
