Kayla Morinaga Wins Heather Farr/Colorado Memorial Golf Tournament
Written by: Portland State Athletics
Release: 10/02/2007

Kayla Morinaga shot 74-69-71=214 to win the Heather Farr/Colorado Memorial Golf Tournament.

Broomfield, CO-Portland State golfer Kayla Morinaga shot a one-under par 71 on Tuesday to come from two shots behind and win the Heather Farr/Colorado Memorial Invitational Golf Tournament.

A junior from Waipahu, HI, Morinaga became just the third Viking to be medalist in a collegiate tournament in the 11-year history of the program. Only Taya Battistella (twice) and Rebecca Randolph had done so previously. Randolph was the most recent, winning the Bronco Fall Classic in 2003.

Morinaga recorded 10 birdies in the 54-hole tournament, which took place Monday and Tuesday at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club. Her two-under par 74-69-71=214 was two shots better than second-round leader Dominique Pytlewski of Colorado. Pytlewski shot a three-over par 75 and finished at even-par 216 for the tournament.

With a second-round 69, Morinaga matched her career-best at Portland State and marked just the sixth sub-70 round in school history. The 54-hole total of 214 is Morinaga’s personal best as well and one shot off the school record.

The tournament was won by host Colorado. The Buffaloes shot 301-287-297=885 to win by four over Oklahoma. The Vikings were 14th among 20 teams competing, shooting 318-298-310=926. PSU beat three Big Sky Conference schools (Northern Colorado, Montana State, Weber State), but trailed 11th-place Eastern Washington (918) by eight shots.

Sophomore Hannah Bews tied for 37th for the Vikings. She shot 78-73-79=230. Bews' second-round 73 was a personal best at Portland State.
Danielle Ranallo and Justine Hix, also sophomores, finished 72nd and 79th respectively, among 100 participants. Freshman Alexia Brown tied for 97th.

Morinaga led the Viking team with a 78.1 scoring average in 2006-07. Through two tournaments and six rounds this year, she is averaging 73.8 strokes per round – a school-record pace.

Portland State competes again on Oct. 8-9 at the Bronco Fall Classic. The tournament is hosted by Boise State at Falcon Crest Golf Club in Kuna, ID.
