We've updated the site to combine all the forums that were part of the Big Sky Fans Network into one location. This will make it easier to navigate and participate in all the discussions for each school without having to have multiple accounts, etc. We are still working out some tweaks but please let us know if you notice anything.

2019 RECRUITING CLASS

With 4 seniors leaving, we have 4 open spots for this year recruiting class barring any transfers...

So far, there's one commit to Coach Katz and staff

Rick Barros III 6-6 SF Will come in as a Freshman. (Good size for the Big Sky Conference. Good stroke for an outside shooter). A hometown kid that went to Capital Christian and spent this past year playing at Nation Wide Academy (Prep school) in Oklahoma. Didn't garner a lot of interest in the recruiting trail (one offer from DII Northwest Nazarene) but if he can come in and play tough defense and hit the three, Coach Katz will definitely play him.

Christian Terrell 6-5 G Will be a senior transfer with what should be one year of eligibility remaining. A guy who was recruited hard by Katz and a lot of other D1 school out of Sac High, committed to USCB. Didn't do much these past three years at the school so let's see if he'll do anything with his last year of college ball with the Hornets. Oddly, joining his former UCSB teammate, last year Hornet transfer Brandon 'Dante' Davis who should be available to play after sitting out last year because of transfer rules. If Terrell is not transferring as a graduate transfer, then he will have to sit out per transfer rule making him a Senior in 2020-2021 season joining this past year's sophomore class.

That's it for now. Good size coming in. Not much as far as production. We should either have 2 or 3 (if the Terrell transfer isn't a graduate transfer) roster spots open. How are liking Katz's recruiting haul so far? I personally like it quite a bit. It's time we get some size on our team at the G position... :coffee:

So far.

Rick Barros III 6'5 SF (Freshman)
Christian Terrell 6'5 G (Gran Transfer) *Not signed
Raazhel Watkins 6'0 PG (JUCO) Will come in as a Junior

The trend continues, it's difficult to recruit 6'8 and above F/C to a mid-major program without a lot of success.

Any thoughts on this recruiting class?

Watkins' stat line looks like he could be the perimeter shooter that his program has lacked the last few years. If he can fill that role then it would help out tremendously.

Barros sounds like a player that is going to need quite a bit of development, otherwise he doesn't come here.

Terrell (if he comes) looks like he'll be a role player coming off the bench. Stats are pretty weak for playing almost 20 mpg.

Next year should be pretty rough given the huge drop off at PG with Graves graduation. Maybe Brandon Davis can step up and have a huge year.

Patton is one if not the best Center in the conference, so clearly that is not the biggest immediate need for this team. It will be in the future and clearly that was an excellent find and they did great developing him because he was improved tremendously and if he can make another leap this offseason that could be huge.

There is not going to be some huge dropoff next year due to Graves leaving. Most of the core players are back and they will improve and there are ample other guys that can also step up and play guard.

The biggest need for the roster this offseason was immediate shooting help, the defense should be solid again next season.

Oh yes, Patton has developed himself into a top 5 F/C in the Big Sky. But going into his Senior year, it'd be nice to have a Freshman in the pipeline ready to play heavy minutes after Patton leaves. But as a mid-major program, having size up front is a luxury. We were spoiled by 4 years of Stuteville and Patton stepping in right after. According to VerbalCommits, Katz and staff is also recruiting 2020 PF/C Samuel Mennenga out of New Zealand. They do have competition for his commitment as Portland (WCC) also wants his service. He will likely end up with a few more D1 offers by the end of his HS career so I don't expect us to be able to land him. Let's see if Izayah Mauriohooho-Le'afa can sway him haha.

Regarding this recruiting class...here's my take...

Rick Barros III 6'5 SF (Freshman) - will end up be a starter for the Hornets if he follows the program and the developmental process. Too much size and too sweet of a shooting stroke for Katz not to play him.

Christian Terrell 6'5 G (Gran Transfer) *Not signed - So it's confirmed that he'll have to sit out a year. He didn't do much at UCSB but the talent is definitely there. If things goes as planned, he and Brandon Davis will end up manning the back court for Katz for 1 year in 2020-2021 season. Honestly, that'll be the most "talented" back court since Garity and McKinney was walking around campus.

Raazhel Watkins 6'0 PG (JUCO) Will come in as a Junior. This reminds me of the McKinney recruitment. On paper, he should be a walk on (at most). Doesn't have a lot of D1 qualities but you never know because the same thing was said about McKinney (But he was at least 6'2) not 5'11 "6'0:. With a team loaded with guards, he'll have a hard time getting any PT if he just stay the way he was at the JUCO level.

Yeah not buying this statement at all. Graves scored 24% of all Hornet points, 29% of all Hornet 3s, 28% of all made FTs (Graves was 5th in the BSC in scoring), and had 36% of all team assists (1st in the BSC), and 26% of all team steals (1st in the BSC) this past season. That's a massive stat line to replace; I expect a huge drop off next season.

You also think that 18-19 was some massive improvement to 17-18, which it wasn't. We just played a way weaker schedule non-conference schedule and the Big Sky was way down as a collective which made the conference schedule a lot easier. So you're predicting basically a last place or second to last place finish in conference, time will tell.

Spin it however you want but the results speak for themselves. Improving from 7-25 (4-14 BSC) in 17/18 to 15-16 (8-12 BSC) in 18/19 IS a massive improvement. I'm not even going to bother comparing team stats between the two seasons because it obvious to anyone that follows this program that the team play was vastly better, and that is in large part due to one guy: Marcus Graves.

I have already stated that the 18/19 season was disappointing given the talent/experience on the roster and that there should have been another 3-5 BSC wins which would have made the discrepancy in results between the 2 seasons even greater.

The problem with your statements is the fact that we did not have Graves for the disastrous 17/18 season and will not have him for 19/20, yet you claim there won’t be a massive drop off. Your logic on the impact of Graves on the win-loss record (and overall improved team play) is severely flawed. That said I hope I am wrong about next season and this program can be near 500 again.

Looks like someone that can contribute right away. Let's hope it plays out that way.

Alrighty, here's the updated Sacramento State's Incoming Class

Rick Barros III G 6-5 200 Fr. Sacramento, Calif./Nation Wide Academy
Ryan Blackmon G 6-0 180 Fr. Inglewood, Calif./Culver City HS
Jordan Cooke-Harper F 6-9 220 So. San Diego, Calif./Southwestern JC
Spencer Monteiro F 6-6 195 Jr. Woodbridge, Calif./San Joaquin Delta JC
Raazhel Watkins G 6-1 165 Jr. Concord, Calif./Los Medanos JC

Quite the large class. I'm curious as to why we haven't heard anything about the Christian Terrell (UCSB) transfer. But according to Verbal Commits (http://verbalcommits.com/schools/sacramento-state), he will be redshirting this year. I like this recruiting class quite a bit. It's a good balance of size as well as different year players to balance out the roster. Only thing, if the class is this large, 5 not* including Terrel, does that mean that at least two players will be transferring? We had 4 Seniors (all scholarship players) graduating and 6 incoming, so the math at least adds up. Has anyone heard anything?

6 Incoming players. 11 Returners. Terrell is sitting out this year due to NCAA transfer rule. Bring the roster to 17 players. Interesting...
