Michael Taylor, who started all but four games last season for Eastern Washington, announced Monday that he will join the Montana men’s basketball team next fall.

Taylor, a 6-foot-4, 190-pound combination guard, averaged 5.7 points and 1.9 assists per game as a true freshman last season for the Eagles, who finished at 15-14.

“I just didn’t like how it was this year,” Taylor said of his reasons for leaving one Big Sky Conference school for another. “I don’t want to go into too much detail. I was just looking for something different.”

Taylor must sit out next season as a Division I transfer. He’ll still have three years of eligibility left when he joins the Grizzlies’ active roster for the 2008-09 season.

Taylor must pay his way to Montana next season, but will receive a scholarship the following year.

“I’m the oldest of six kids and they’re going to start graduating every couple of years,” said Taylor, who was selected by the Seattle Times as Washington’s 1A player of the year as a senior at Brewster. “I didn’t want my parents to have to deal with too much.”

He averaged 25.2 points, 9.7 rebounds, 6.7 assists and nearly three steals per game in leading 24-2 Brewster to its second-straight runner-up finish in the State 1A Tournament where he was MVP. Taylor and fellow EWU teammates Chris Sprinker and Jack Loofburrow played together in Washington’s 103-95 loss to Oregon in the Les Schwab Northwest Shootout on April 2, 2006. Loofburrow scored 10 points in the game, with Taylor adding five and Sprinker finishing with three. Taylor, whose father Tim is Brewster’s head coach, helped lead the Bears to a 102-7 record in four seasons. He averaged 20 points, eight assists and nine rebounds as a junior when he made 50 percent of his three-point shots. He was a first team 1A All-State selection from Washington Hoops, and an honorable mention selection by the Associated Press.
